We caught the bus from Punta del Este back to Montevideo where we made a brief stop for one night. Compared to its sister city of Buenos Aires on the distant shore of the Río de la Plata, the city was small, quiet and more than a little run down. We spent a day wandering through the streets of the old town Ciudad Vieja, admiring the buildings and monuments. One of the highlights was the delightful port side market place Mercado del Puerto, where scores of restaurants had sprung up serving delicious spreads of seafood and meats grilled over hot coals and served with copious quantities of local red wine.
