Market Day at ChichicastenangoLatitude 14.73861°N Longitude 91.16156°W Thursday, October 10, 2002 Diary:Got up early to catch a 7am chicken bus to Chichicastenango for the big
market day. (A "chicken bus" is the fond name given to the local public
bus transport system in Guatemala, where you could find yourself squeezed
next to almost any kind of person or animal).
The markets were pretty intense and we got tired out good! Definitely
well worth the visit, depite being just a little touristy. Prices for
things were much higher here than at Pana or the other villages around
Lake Atitlán. It was a jostling, riotous rainbow of colours, sounds and
smells.
We stayed in Chichi for most of the day, returing around 5pm on no less
than three separate chicken buses. Keiko was tired yet fulfilled by all
the tough haggling she had perpetrated and victoriously clung to numerous
plastic bags filled with her purchases. "Whatever", said Nico...
